Our house’s genealogy

Friday, December 5th, 2008

I imagine many of our fellow Houseblogs.net members are familiar with the blog Bungalowicious. For those of you who aren’t, much like Bungalow Insanity, it follows a Portland, Oregon couple’s adventures in remodeling a bungalow.

Recently, the author of Bungalowcious – Dawn – made an offer we couldn’t refuse. Dawn, as her blog’s regular readers already know, has quite a talent for house geneaology, and she very kindly offered to find out what she could about our house. This is something that we’ve been interested in for a long time, but have never had the time to pursue (and if I’m being honest, really had no idea how to do.)

We’ve been wanting to give Dawn credit for doing this, but it’s taken us a month to do it. (Sorry Dawn!) That should give you an idea of why we (at least speaking for myself) were not able to accomplish this ourselves!

If you are curious about the history of our house, or the process of discovering it, keep reading. Hopefully Dawn doesn’t mind us plugging her! We were just so surprised and impressed by this… Click to continue »

What to do about soggy hats and mittens…

While checking out these adorable mittens on Etsy (oh, how I love Etsy!):

…I had a thought. Remember this post from awhile back, where we discussed using the Deka curtain rod from IKEA to display kids’ art work?

Display your kid's art for the low, low price of $4.99!

Well, it occurred to me that this same Deka curtain rod could also work really well in a mudroom or back hallway as a way of hanging soggy snow-covered mittens, hats, socks and scarves up to dry. Click to continue »

Come Visit Us on Facebook!

Our blog now has it’s own Facebook page.  If you feel so inclined, please stop by and say hi!

Do we have the best neighbors in the world, or what?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Our next door neighbors are pretty much the nicest neighbors anyone could ever ask for – friendly, kind, funny and basically just all-around-swell. We now need to add “unbelievably generous” to that long list of positive attributes. Check out amazing pre-Thanksgiving gift they bestowed upon us…

Speechless? Yeah. Us too.

Thank you Marcia and Brooks! We promise to take very good care of this beautiful new addition to the Bungalow Insanity family!

Check out our new look!

We decided that a redesign for Bungalow Insanity was long overdue.

Hope you like the new look!

If you see a picture of rolling hills instead of a picture of the interior of our house, keep hitting ‘refresh.’  When I viewed our site from work this morning, the default template picture was still being displayed on our page.

School Fish

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Chloe’s kindergarten teacher is taking a three week vacation in Germany this month, so we are caring for the classroom fish while she is out of town.

Chloe requested that we park the fishbowl in Ginger’s room underneath a photo of a pond full of goldfish so “he won’t get lonely.”

I *heart* Cottager’s Wife!

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

A few weeks ago, the Bungalow Insanity family was lucky enough to visit British Columbia’s gorgeous Sunshine Coast.  If you haven’t had the pleasure yourself, you may want schedule a trip ASAP!

While in the area, we had the great pleasure of meeting Cottager’s Wife and her charming kids.  We had a wonderful time touring the Keats View cottage and its lush green garden.

I’m happy to report that Cottager’s Wife is just as lovely in person as she is online, and I hope to have the chance to visit with her again next time we venture north.

If you aren’t familiar with her blog, I recommend beginning with her scrumptious banana apricot muffin recipe.

“Look What I Did!” Contest Entry – Our Kitchen Windows

Kitchen Before and After Montage

We can never resist entering a contest (a few of you may remember our infamous Blair Witch/Home Depot video) so when we read that Houseblogs.net was sponsoring a sweepstakes in partnership with True Value we, of course, had to enter.

We’ve done so many DIY projects here at Bungalow Insanity, it’s hard to choose a favorite, but one which stands out among many is our kitchen remodel. Basically, we designed the entire kitchen around four $10 salvaged windows. Click to continue »

Bungalow Hardware

Monday, June 30th, 2008

One of the features that initially sold us on our little bungalow was its incredibly intact stained woodwork. And while the wainscoting, box beams and pocket doors made us swoon, we especially loved the built-ins sprinkled throughout the house. Pretty AND practical – what’s not to love, right?

This particular latch adorns the doors of both the china cabinet in our dining room and the bookshelves flanking the living room fireplace:

Viewed from the front, it’s not the most exciting piece of hardware I’ve ever seen, but I’ve always thought that the interior latch is especially funky and unusual-looking:
