Thankfully, Julio’s dad came out for a couple of weeks to help tie up some of the major loose ends. His tips and tricks allowed the cabinet installation to go very smoothly. Without his help, the job would have taken MUCH longer and would not have turned out so well.
This was our pile of old cabinets out on the back patio. Since they were solidly built and in good condition, we wanted to try to find a new home for them.
We did end up getting a response from craigslist, and a guy took them with the intention of pulling them apart for the wood and creating new cabinets for a friend of his. That felt much better than just chucking them. We went to great effort to find homes for anything salvageable in this project.
Kitchen without the cabinets and tile. The sink is still attached in this picture, because rusty plumbing connections made us dubious about disconnecting anything. In the end, just about all the plumbing in the basement had to be torn apart to be able to a point where we could actually find a pipe that didn’t disintegrate when we tried to disconnect it. The galvanized pipes just don’t hold up over time!
This is how our kitchen looked when we bought the house. Didn’t go to well with the 1911 house, although it definitely had its own brand of charm…
